I absolutely loved this book. To be honest I was very confused in the beginning (about to page 50) But I caught on after that , and most everything else made sense. The story is about Mare Barrow, who is a red. Her blood is red, and your blood color is what divides the country. The Silvers and the Reds (the two blood colors) are at war. The Silvers are the Royals, they have special abilities. Mare is a thief, a typical red girl who steals just to survive. One night Mare is doing on of the things she is very good at, running away. She meets this guy , SPOILER (Prince Cal), yet she doesn't know it's him, they have a small connection. He sees that she's hurting and gives her money. (quite a lot of it too). The next morning silver guards arrive at her house, assuming it's the normal house search they get up and recite the usual speech. They tell they family that they are not here to search, but instead Mare has been recruited to serve the Royals. When she arrives at the palace she is taken to where the silver girls are showing off their powers, and compete for the prince's' hand in marriage. During this time of year each prince gets to chose a princess based upon her powers. Inside the “showing” Mare can sense that rebels are coming. And again against the Queen’s requests (who she works for) Mare tries to run away. A Red has never been known to have a power such as a silver, but that's all about to change. When silver guards chase after Mare, and what seems of know where lightning strikes. The lightning is a power, just like the silvers have. But it came from Mare. Again I will say, A red has never had such a power as silver. And my assumption was that the reds always have had powers, and since the silvers are known as the royals, they have never told the reds because they wanted to stay in power. Not to mention they're at war. When Mare realizes she has this power, they lock her in a cage, and the Queen goes into Mare’s head to see her thoughts. (Yes, I know, It’s weird). The Queen calls Mare in for a little chat. The Queen tells Mare, that she is now Mareena, a lost princess. She has to pretend to be, act, and behave like a silver would. Along in this mass chaos, they is a group of rebels. The Scarlet Guard. Know one really knows who they are a first except for Mare. It is (SPOILER) Farley. Okay, now you know who the scarlet guard is all continue on with Mare or Mareena’s chat with the Queen . Mare comes to the realization that she must do this, or she will die. She asks about her family, and the Queen says she will give them money for keeping this "little" lie. Mare says she wants her brothers and friend, Kilron out from the war. The King and Queen do so immediately. The Queen also tells Mare that she must marry the Prince Maven. (The son). Mare continues to be a perfect little silver princess, just like the Queen’s order. Mare is both friends with Cal and Maven, which makes the story quite interesting. A few weeks in Maven notices that Mare is homesick and asks Cal (the heir to the throne) If Mare can go see her family. Reluctantly, Cal says yes, and he himself takes her there. She finds out her brother died “in the war” but in the truth he was a part of The Scarlet guard, and died because of being a rebel. A few night late (SPOILER) Maven and Mare join the scarlet guard. They work together to complete tasks for the Scarlet Guard. At the very end
DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU WANT TO SPOIL THE BOOK OR HAVE READ IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Kilorn and Farley get capture but Mare and Maven help them escape from the dungeons.
Maven turns his back on Mare and reveals he has been using her. He is the Queen’s son, the son who hides behind the shadows. The Queen is angry and kills the king himself. She acts like shes crying just in the knick of time when the cameras turn back on. Maven has lied about everything, and Mare trusted him. Cal is more than upset at Maven and The Queen (his step-mom). Maven and his mom (The Queen) blame it on Mare and Cal. And since everyone believes what they said they are sentenced to death. Cal and Maven end up in a big battle at which they (Cal and Mare) almost won. But instead they drown. They think they are dead, but now in this world they see Mare’s brother, Farley and Kilorn who all “died”. This ending part was Farley confusing, and ends in the cliffhanger of they don’t know where they are exactly and what will happen to the Scarlet Guard.
