Q: What inspired your book The Distance Between Us?
A: The Distance Between Us was inspired by a porcelain doll shop I used to sit out in front of while waiting for my daughters to be done with guitar lessons at the music shop next door to it. I used to sit there in my car and stare at those dolls that were staring out the window at me and think, that would be the greatest setting for a novel. After several months of this, I thought, why aren't I writing this novel? And so I did.
Q: Can you tell us anything about your new book By Your Side coming out in February 2017?
A: First, the date got moved up to January 31, 2017! So that's exciting. Two weeks early. But yes, this is a fun book about a girl who gets locked in a library with a guy for an entire weekend. They are not fans of each other at first, but become friends. Then they are free from the library and have to navigate their friendship outside their controlled environment. It's a fun but also heartfelt book that I think my readers will enjoy.
Q: Which character do you most relate to throughout your books?
A: That's a good question. None of my characters are based off of me, but they all got a little piece of me whether it was one of my insecurities or one of my strengths or my sense of humor, etc etc. So I guess I could say that I relate to all of them a little bit. But they also got personality traits that I don't have at all. I can still see things through their eyes though and understand their feelings so in that way, I can relate to many characters, both the ones I write and the ones I read about.
Q: Which book out of all of them is your favorite?
A: I always say that I don't have a favorite. Because really, I like them all. But I do hold a special place in my heart for my first book: Pivot Point. There is just something about your first book being published--the excitement, the newness, the terror--that is the culmination of all your dreams coming together. So yeah, when I see that book, I get a giddy happy feeling that reminds me of that time in my life.
Q: Will there be a movie for any of your books?
A: I hope one day I can say yes to this question. Right now, I have to say no. I do have a movie agent and am working to make this happen every time I write a new book. So hopefully one day.
Q: Are you going to have anymore series or will there just be stand alone books?
A: I don't know that I'll have any more series. Especially if I keep writing contemporary. But I do hope to have a 3 book collection in the near future where they are all tied together in one way or another. So not exactly a series. Think, Anna, Lola, Isla (by Steph Perkins). I hope to do that kind of thing.
Q: What made you want to write The Fill-In Boyfriend?
A: I've always loved the 'fake boyfriend' trope and I thought I'd try my hand at it. There's just something about pretending to be with someone and then slowly developing real feelings that gets to me every time.
Q: When did you first start writing?
A: I didn't start writing until about 10 years ago. I didn't even know that I wanted to be a writer before that. I've always been an avid reader though and absolutely adore books.
Q: Your book PS I like you recently released, can you tell us a little bit about the main character?
A: Lily is a quirky, funny, loyal girl who loves to listen to music and write lyrics. She loves her big family even if they are a little weird. And she lives in her head a lot.
